Lower Eyelid Lift Dr. Michael Omidi

A lower eyelid lift, also known as lower eyelid blepharoplasty, helps to rejuvenate the lower eyelids by addressing concerns such as under-eye bags, wrinkles, and drooping skin. It can address significant eye bags, making patients’ eye area appear smoother and less tired-looking. (1) As you age, the skin beneath your eyes may lose its elasticity, or its ability to snap back into place. This is caused by gravity and the natural deflation of fat pockets in your under-eye skin. (2) Lower blepharoplasty can be performed as a standalone procedure or at the same time as an upper eyelid lift.

Dr. Michael Omidi is a double board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in Beverly Hills and the Greater Los Angeles Area who specializes in facial rejuvenation. If sagging eye bags are taking away from your confidence, or if you simply want to refresh your appearance, Dr. Omidi is determined to help you reach your goals.

Before and After Photos

About Lower Eyelid Lifts

Patients who choose lower eyelid lifts experience sagging or puffy skin beneath their eyes. By removing and reshaping this area of skin, muscle and fat, this surgery can help make a seamless transition between the skin under your eyes to the skin of your cheek. (1)Dr. Omidi will ensure the incisions are discrete by hiding them in the lower eyelid itself. The procedure for your lower eyelid lift may look different if fat is the primary cause of your eye bags, or if your eye bags are made up of excess skin. (2)

Benefits

By getting rid of eye bags and under-eye wrinkles, a lower eyelid lift can serve to increase a patient’s confidence, while also taking years off of their appearance. After this procedure, patients often enjoy a more wakeful and refreshed demeanor.

While removing the sagging skin underneath the eyes, a lower eyelid lift can also fill in the hollow area beneath the eyes that may occur at the same time as eye bags, contributing to a more youthful appearance. (3) Dr. Omidi recognizes the importance of eyes as a feature and prioritizes restoring eyes to their previous brightness.

Candidates

If bothersome bags beneath your eyes are making you look sleepy, unhappy, or older than you are, you are most likely a great candidate to undergo a lower eyelid lift.

Other factors we look for in candidates for a lower eye lift:

  • You have realistic expectations that align with the capabilities of the procedure.
  • You are in reasonably good health.
  • You have no problematic eye conditions that have not been addressed.
  • You have sight in both eyes.
  • You do not have uncontrolled glaucoma.
  • You have waited at least 6 months after receiving LASIK (laser vision correction).

Personal Consultation with Dr. Omidi

During your personal consultation with Dr. Omidi, you will have the opportunity to express what you want to get out of a lower eyelid lift. You will get to know the ins and outs of the procedure, including how it’s done, how to prepare, and how much it will cost.

It is at this time that Dr. Omidi might also provide you with recommendations for other surgeries that would complement your lower eyelid lift. To set up your consultation, call our Beverly Hills office at (310) 281-0155 or fill out our online contact form.

We also offer virtual consultations for your convenience.

Preparation

After discussing your goals, expectations, and motivations, Dr. Omidi will let you know how to prepare for your surgery. Preparation for lower eyelid lift surgery will partly consist of an examination period. We will ask if you have a history of dry eyes, observe the clarity of your vision, and observe your eye movement ability and eye reflexes. (2)

Dr. Omidi will assess the skin beneath your eyes, the surrounding muscle, and the elasticity of your under-eyelids. During this examination, Dr. Omidi will also decide whether or not you would benefit from canthal supports, which would tighten your under-eyelid muscles. (2)

What you can do on your own to prepare:

  • Stop taking any medications and supplements that have a blood-thinning effect.
  • Stop smoking at least 6 weeks before your appointment.
  • Call someone you trust to drive you home.
  • Plan to take about 2 weeks off of work.

Procedure

Depending on whether your eye bags are caused primarily by fat pads or by excess skin, each patient’s procedure might look a little different. However, the procedure for a lower eyelid lift often consists of one or a combination of the following:

Transcutaneous Approach

During this approach, Dr. Omidi will hide a discrete incision along the natural crease directly beneath the lower eyelid. In this way, Dr. Omidi can reshape or remove parts of the fat pad that is causing your eye bags. (2)

Transconjunctival Approach

If taking a transconjunctival approach, Dr. Omidi will make an incision on the inside of the lower eyelid and proceed to remove the fat pads in your eye bags. This approach does not address excess skin on its own. (2)

Lateral Canthal Support

Lateral Canthal Support is a helpful tool that supports the lower eyelid position and makes sure the muscle of your lower eyelid no longer sags. Adding canthal support can also help ensure that the results of your lower eyelid lift are long-lasting. (2)

Recovery

After your procedure, Dr. Omidi will provide you with detailed instructions about how to go about the recovery process. We recommend resting and elevating your head by propping up pillows or using a recliner chair. To address any pain and swelling, we recommend gently applying cold compresses. (2)

Dr. Omidi will remove your sutures about 4 or 5 days after the surgery. For at least two weeks after your surgery, we advise that you avoid strenuous activities.

Lower Eyelid Lift Results

After the swelling from your lower eyelid lift subsides and the incisions heal, you will be able to show off a wakeful, rejuvenated appearance thanks to a smoother under eye area. The results from a lower eyelid lift procedure are permanent, but your features will still continue to be affected by natural aging. We recommend continuing to take care of your skin by applying SPF, wearing hats, and using other kinds of sun protection while outside.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Dr. Omidi might recommend one of the following procedures for other areas of the face that may be affected in similar ways:

Facelift

A facelift is a comprehensive procedure that aims to remove excess, sagging skin from the face and neck, contributing to a rejuvenated appearance. In addition to smoothing the skin of the under-eye area, a facelift also contours the jawline and elevates the cheeks. Dr. Omidi can help you decide during your consultation whether a full, mid, or mini facelift would be right for you.

Forehead Lift

Like the under-eye area, gravity and aging can cause the forehead and brows to droop over time. A forehead lift, or brow lift, is a procedure that will raise the brows back up above the eyes, eliminating the unhappy expression that drooping brows may cause and making patients look more youthful and alert.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Using a CO₂ fractional laser technique, Dr. Omidi is able to help reverse some of the signs of aging by stimulating collagen production and smoothing wrinkles. This laser uses small beams of light energy on facial skin for a non-surgical approach to reviving skin and enhancing patients’ appearances.
