About Kybella
Kybella is a non-invasive, injectable treatment used to help reduce the appearance of a “double chin” in patients. Many patients experience changes in their submental area from various factors such as aging, genetics, and even weight fluctuations that can lead to diminished confidence and lowered self-esteem.
This FDA-approved treatment is composed of deoxycholic acid, a substance that is naturally found in the body and helps absorb fat cells through a process called focal adipolysis. Focal adipolysis is the process of specifically targeting and eliminating fat cells, ensuring the surrounding tissue is preserved. (2) This solution helps break down the structure of fat cells to help the body’s lymphatic system process them. (3)
Benefits
This FDA-approved treatment can help patients achieve a natural-looking, sculpted appearance through the metabolization of fat. This means patients can improve their double chin as their facial proportions are rebalanced and their confidence is boosted. Unlike many other options for treating submental fullness, Kybella is non-surgical, benefitting patients interested in a minimally invasive procedure with a short downtime. The procedure itself is also quick to administer, with each session lasting 15-20 minutes on average. (4)

Candidates & Consultation
Before each appointment is scheduled, our team at Omidi Plastic Surgery requires each candidate to attend a personal consultation. This consultation is a chance to understand the motivations and goals each patient has regarding their treatment while determining if Kybella is right for them. Dr. Omidi will perform a comprehensive medical evaluation at the personal consultation, checking both the physical treatment area and the patient’s medical history.
The ideal candidates for Kybella are those interested in reducing their facial fat, particularly the submental fat found in the chin. Candidates for Kybella are those seeking a noticeable enhancement but are not interested in a surgical procedure or extensive recovery. Those who have recently lost a large amount of weight should be near or at an ideal, stable weight as Kybella is not a weight loss treatment.
All candidates interested in Kybella should be in good overall health, free from any underlying health conditions that may impair recovery. This treatment is not recommended for breastfeeding or pregnant patients. If applicable, patients should be prepared to quit smoking before the procedure and until fully healed. All candidates should have realistic expectations regarding the results of their treatment, with a further understanding that some patients may need multiple sessions to achieve a smoother, more sculpted appearance.

Preparation
Dr. Omidi will compose a list of personalized preparation instructions for each patient at their consultation, but the preparation process for Kybella is fairly straightforward. Patients should stay hydrated and eat nutritiously leading up to the procedure and ensure they are also getting an adequate amount of sleep. You will also need to avoid medications and supplements that thin your blood before the procedure. You will need to stop drinking alcohol 24-48 hours before and after. We also recommend that you avoid harsh skincare such as retinoids and chemical peels to ensure your skin is in its natural state.
Procedure
A Kybella treatment begins with the sanitization of the treatment area before the administration of a topical anesthetic to numb the treatment area. Dr. Omidi will administer the solution beneath the skin, focusing on areas with more excess fat. Kybella is primarily composed of deoxycholic acid, a natural acid found in the body that helps break down and eliminate fat cells through the lymphatic system. (3) This procedure takes between 15-20 minutes to complete with the amount of necessary sessions varying from patient to patient. (4) Patients may find that they need multiple sessions of Kybella to achieve their ideal result, with most needing between two and four sessions. (5)
Recovery & Results
Following a Kybella treatment, patients may experience tenderness or light redness at the treatment site. If you experience discomfort, you can alleviate it with over-the-counter medication. The treatment requires minimal downtime, and Dr. Omidi can provide specific instructions to help you recover.
After any residual swelling has subsided, patients will be able to enjoy a more slender, youthful-looking chin. Depending on each patient’s treatment goals and amount of fat, it may take multiple sessions to achieve their ideal sculpt. The results of Kybella are long-lasting, with many patients seeing extended results with the proper lifestyle habits.
Corresponding Procedures

Dr. Omidi and his team of experts can combine different treatments to help each patient achieve results beyond the scope of one procedure. While there are many procedures that Kybella can be complemented with to achieve a fuller level of facial rejuvenation, we recommend combining this procedure with a Morpheus8 treatment! This cutting-edge device combines radiofrequency technology and microneedling to help tighten and remodel facial skin while also stimulating the production of collagen.
